Welcome to Buena Vista Hotel
Buena Vista Hotel, located at 118 Whittley Ave in Avalon, California, offers travelers a straightforward and budget-friendly option for exploring the charm of Catalina Island. With a solid rating of 4.1, this hotel embodies a no-frills, no-nonsense atmosphere that appeals to visitors seeking a simple place to rest after a day spent discovering the island’s unique attractions.
The hotel's setting is undeniably its strongest suit. Perched overlooking Avalon Bay and the Pacific Ocean, it provides guests with scenic views that stir a quiet appreciation for the natural beauty surrounding them. Its close proximity to key destinations—such as Catalina Island Museum, Catalina Casino, and the ferry pier on Cabrillo Peninsula—makes Buena Vista an excellent base for exploration.
However, Buena Vista Hotel is far from a luxury experience. The building shows its age, with visible signs of wear both inside and out. Rooms offer just the essentials, resembling something slightly above camping comfort. Some guests have remarked on the need for updates—peeling paint, water damage in bathrooms, older furnishings, and worn electrical outlets all point to a property that could benefit from some tender loving care. The hard mattress and limited TV channels add to the rustic, minimalistic vibe that may not suit those craving modern conveniences.
That said, the pricing and service balance these shortcomings. It stands as a practical choice for travelers who prioritize location and budget over lavish amenities. Free Wi-Fi and parking are welcomed perks, while the absence of a pool, on-site restaurant, and pet-friendly policies reflect the hotel’s streamlined approach. The carpet remains in good shape, and the character of the older rooms adds a nostalgic touch for those who appreciate history and authenticity in their stay.
Ultimately, Buena Vista Hotel is an honest lodging option that invites guests to focus less on material luxury and more on the island’s captivating environment. Its value lies in its simplicity, scenic views, and walkable access to Avalon’s highlights. For anyone willing to trade a bit of polish for a genuine island experience, Buena Vista delivers a solid stay where the essence of Catalina can be fully embraced.

It's a safe place to keep your stuff at and come back to after you've been out all day. Don't expect it to look like a 5-star hotel. The rooms give you the bare minimum of what you need. I'd describe it as one step up from camping. It's an older building and it's obvious, inside and out. The rooms aren't upgraded, things could use a nice coat of paint and theres water damage in the bathroom. But it's the cheapest rate aside from sleeping at the camp grounds. The hotel manager was extrememly nice, knew the town, was able to provide some recommendations, and up front about the building while I was booking so nothing was a surprise. If you're looking to put your money towards other activities and know you'll barely be in the room, this is perfect. If you're looking for a room to relax in throughout the day, away from the crowd, this probably wouldn't be my first choice.
Room was older but with a lot of character. Great price and service. Walking distance great to all shops. Bed was hard as a rock. And not comfortable. Tv worked but not all channels came in. Outlets did not hold chargers and need to be replaced. Hole behind shower. Needs paint. Carpet in good shape. Great view from balcony. Hayward room. Basic hotel but does need some TLC
